Mature canopy, tight sites
Landscaping & tree care in Bethesda
Bethesda gardens are small, overlooked and full of very large old trees. All three facts shape what can actually be built.
The value of a Bethesda garden is usually in its canopy — oaks and tulip poplars that were there long before the house was extended. They are also the constraint. You cannot trench a drain line through a root plate, you cannot raise grade over roots and expect the tree to be alive in five years, and you cannot build a patio right up to a trunk without deciding which of the two you would rather keep.
Because our arborists and our build crews are the same firm, those decisions get made once, on site, with the person who will do the digging standing there. That is the practical argument for a design–build firm on a tight lot with big trees: nobody is handing a drawing to a crew who have never met the tree.
What we do in Bethesda
Local rules worth knowing
What governs work in Bethesda.
Ask any tree company for their licence number
Maryland requires commercial roadside tree work to be carried out under a Licensed Tree Expert, and a firm doing the physical work must have at least one on staff. The DNR Forest Service licenses LTEs on experience, education and an examination. Ours is #1798. It is a fair question to ask anyone quoting you tree work.
Trees along the road are not yours to cut
Under Maryland's Roadside Tree Law (Natural Resources Article §§5-401–5-411) any planting, pruning or removal of a tree in the public road right-of-way needs a permit from the Maryland DNR Forest Service first — and the work has to be done under the direction of a Licensed Tree Expert. A permit is not permission from the tree's owner: that comes separately from the State Highway Administration, the county, or the municipality. We hold Maryland Tree Expert License #1798 and handle the permit as part of the job.
Construction near a county street tree needs a plan
Montgomery County's Department of Permitting Services requires a roadside tree plan where construction is likely to affect a tree in the county right-of-way. It is filed alongside the right-of-way, sediment control or building permit, a Licensed Tree Expert has to be named at the pre-construction meeting, and any replacement planting in the right-of-way goes in between October and April.
Regulations change. These notes summarise published guidance from the agencies named and are a starting point, not legal advice — we confirm the current position for your specific property before any permit-affecting work begins.
Questions we get asked in Bethesda
Straight answers.
Can you build a patio near a mature tree without killing it?
Sometimes, and it depends on the species, the age of the tree and how much of the root plate the patio would cover. The honest answer on some Bethesda lots is that you can have the full-size terrace or the oak, not both — and that is worth hearing before the design is drawn rather than after the roots are cut.
Who should prune a large tree overhanging a Bethesda house?
Someone working under a Maryland Licensed Tree Expert. Ours is #1798. For a tree in the public right-of-way the Maryland DNR Forest Service permit and LTE direction are legal requirements, not a preference.
