DEL Landscapes project photography near Gaithersburg, Montgomery County

DEL Landscapes has been based in Gaithersburg since 1993, and the shop at 7800 Airpark Road is ten minutes from most of the city. That matters more than it sounds: it is the difference between a crew that can swing by to look at a leaning pine on the way back from another job, and one that schedules you for a fortnight on Tuesday.

The housing here runs from the older sections near Olde Towne to the newer subdivisions out towards Kentlands and Quince Orchard, which is a wide spread of lot sizes, soil and drainage behaviour. Most of what we are asked for in Gaithersburg is a front entry that looks deliberate, a back garden that is usable rather than just mown, and the mature trees kept safe around both.

What we do in Gaithersburg

Local rules worth knowing

What governs work in Gaithersburg.

01

Trees along the road are not yours to cut

Under Maryland's Roadside Tree Law (Natural Resources Article §§5-401–5-411) any planting, pruning or removal of a tree in the public road right-of-way needs a permit from the Maryland DNR Forest Service first — and the work has to be done under the direction of a Licensed Tree Expert. A permit is not permission from the tree's owner: that comes separately from the State Highway Administration, the county, or the municipality. We hold Maryland Tree Expert License #1798 and handle the permit as part of the job.

02

Construction near a county street tree needs a plan

Montgomery County's Department of Permitting Services requires a roadside tree plan where construction is likely to affect a tree in the county right-of-way. It is filed alongside the right-of-way, sediment control or building permit, a Licensed Tree Expert has to be named at the pre-construction meeting, and any replacement planting in the right-of-way goes in between October and April.

03

Ask any tree company for their licence number

Maryland requires commercial roadside tree work to be carried out under a Licensed Tree Expert, and a firm doing the physical work must have at least one on staff. The DNR Forest Service licenses LTEs on experience, education and an examination. Ours is #1798. It is a fair question to ask anyone quoting you tree work.

Regulations change. These notes summarise published guidance from the agencies named and are a starting point, not legal advice — we confirm the current position for your specific property before any permit-affecting work begins.

Questions we get asked in Gaithersburg

Straight answers.

Do you need a permit to remove a tree in Gaithersburg?

It depends entirely on where the tree stands. A tree in the public road right-of-way needs a Roadside Tree Permit from the Maryland DNR Forest Service before any pruning or removal, and the work must be done under a Licensed Tree Expert. A tree well inside a private garden is a different question, and county rules are driven by whether your project needs a sediment control permit rather than by the tree itself. We check which applies before quoting.
